"Kvinnemuseet" (The Women's Museum) will give the women history back
A few generations ago, women preferred not to take part in life outside the home. This has made women hardly visible in history books and in Norwegian museums.

The Women's Museum documents, researches and communicates the lives and work of women throughout history and up to our own time. The museum's field of work includes issues related to gender, gender roles and gender identity.

The museum's collections consist of objects, books, photos and archive material. The museum has a well-stocked library that can be used by the public during the museum's opening hours. The museum's magazines contain a large collection of objects. Much is registered and available at Digitalt museum, and some selected objects can be seen in our permanent museum exhibitions "Play for life", "In all public" and "Din Dagny".

The Women's Museum also has some archival material and has recently begun cautiously registering this in the archive registration program Asta.

The newest exhibition is called "The Icebreaker"
As expedition leader for the 90 degrees South expedition in 1986, Monica Kristensen became world famous. She was the first woman in the world to lead a polar expedition.

The exhibition shines a spotlight on three aspects of Kristensen's career: as researcher, expedition leader and author. The common denominator for these three is the fascination for the polar regions. She has led eight expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic, she has published ten books - non-fiction and crime novels - with themes from the polar regions, and she has published a large number of scientific articles as a glaciologist.

Driven by a strong desire to know and an unstoppable desire to work, she has broken through career barriers and prejudices. The exhibition's title "The Icebreaker" plays on precisely this.

Monica Kristensen (b. 1950), who grew up in Kongsvinger, is involved in the project and lends objects, documents and photographs to the exhibition at the Women's Museum. Most of the material has never before been shown publicly. Many of the things have been packed away for the past 25 years and represent a unique story. Among other things, the red pyramid tent that Monica used on the 90 degrees South expedition can be studied up close.

In addition, the museum offers a number of events both at the museum and in the surrounding area. Entry ticket to the Women's Museum also gives free entry to the Kongsvinger Museum. Open all year round for groups
The Women's Museum  closes for a few months in the winter, but is available to groups all year round on request. School classes can visit the museum for free both during and outside the museum's normal opening hours.
