About
Seven crofts, two countries and one forest Finnish kingdom
7-torprunden is the name of an 8.2-kilometre round trip on the Swedish side in Torsby municipality - Lekvattnet, and on the Norwegian side in Varaldskogen in Kongsvinger municipality. As the name suggests, the tour takes you past seven crofts with Forest Finnish origins. You'll find everything from Valli, where only the ruins remain, to Ritamäki, which is perhaps the best-preserved Forest Finnish croft in Finnskogen. The tour takes you through a cross-section of the natural and cultural landscape of Finnskog. The route is mostly along well-trodden forest paths, and there are few wet patches. Outside the wet periods, you can walk virtually dry-shod with trainers.
On the Norwegian side of the border, Lebiko is the natural place to start the hike. You get there by driving in from motorway 200 between Masterud and Øiermoen. Three roads lead in; from Femoen/Dragonmoen, via Viker or from Øierås just east of Øiermoen. All roads are private forest roads, so be aware that the standard is not always top notch.
This round trip is described with Lebiko as the start and end point of the trip. On the 7-torp round, we use the old paths that ran between the crofts. Finnskogleden is the easternmost part of the route. You can read about it in the Finnskogleden map and information booklet. This booklet can be purchased through Finnskogen Tourist Association, among others.
The northernmost part of the route (coinciding with Finnskogleden) was used as a refugee route during the Second World War. The route ran from Kongsvinger to Kissalamp, which is one of the seven tropics we will be travelling through. You can read about this refugee route in the booklet ‘In the footsteps of refugees’ published by DNT Finnskogen og Omegn and others. The booklet is free. You can also find the entire route marked on DNT Finnskogen og Omegn's hiking map ‘Finnskogen Sør’, which is also available from DNT Finnskogen og Omegn.
This is a medium-demanding hike and is about 8 km long. Allow about 3 hours for the hike and is best suited to the period April to October.
